Lettuce Financial announced on October 21 that it is expanding health coverage for solopreneurs ahead of open enrollment. The company says coverage now reaches eligible members in 21 states. Six states are new: Alabama, Idaho, Montana, New Mexico, Oklahoma, and West Virginia.

Health insurance is a top cost for solo workers who lack employer coverage. Any option that pools small owners into a larger group deserves a look before November. Timing matters because enrollment windows close quickly and missed deadlines can leave you without coverage.

What Lettuce Is Offering

Lettuce says the expansion adds dental, vision, and voluntary accident plans to its medical options. It also describes a professional employer organization built for one-person S corporations. That PEO pools those owners into one large group.

The company says its PPO plans carry a $0 deductible. The release does not list premiums, so the monthly price remains unknown. Compare real quotes from several sources before you decide anything about your coverage.

Lettuce also offers solo 401(k) accounts after it acquired Carry earlier this year. Business insurance for one-person companies rounds out the package, covering liability and operational risk. Accounting, taxes, payroll, and benefits all sit on one platform.

Why This Matters For Self-Employed Owners

Group coverage can beat individual marketplace plans for some owners. A pooled group may open plan choices that a single person cannot reach alone. The result depends on your state, your income, and your health needs.

One-person S corporation owners face a specific puzzle when they buy their own health insurance. Health premiums paid through the business can get special tax treatment, but the rules are technical. A PEO structure may simplify the paperwork, though you should ask whether the PEO charges its own fee.

Going uninsured exposes a solo business to a single large medical bill. Even a pricey plan may cost less than that risk. Run the numbers with your own health history in mind.

What Self-Employed Readers Should Do Next

Compare at least three options before open enrollment starts in November, so you are not rushed. Price Lettuce’s plans against your state marketplace and any association plans you can join. Ask for the premium, deductible, out-of-pocket maximum, and network list in writing.

Confirm your state is on the list before you spend time on the details. Lettuce names 21 states, and eligibility depends on membership. If you live elsewhere, the release offers no alternative.

Talk to your accountant about the tax side of any plan you consider. Ask how a PEO or marketplace subsidy changes your self-employed health insurance deduction. Get that answer before you sign anything.

What To Watch Next

Open enrollment begins in November, and the window is shorter this year. Our report on the shorter ACA enrollment window explains the timeline. Mark the dates on your calendar now.

Watch for published premiums and further state expansion as the enrollment season approaches. Lettuce did not post prices in its release, so independent reviews and personal quotes will matter. More states could follow if demand holds.
