Upwork reported its third quarter results on November 2, 2026. Revenue came in at $185.6 million, down from $201.7 million a year earlier. Gross services volume, the total clients spent on the platform, fell 10.1% to $914.1 million.

For freelancers, the report is a read on one of their biggest lead sources. Fewer clients are hiring on Upwork, but the clients who stay are spending more each.

What The Quarterly Report Actually Shows

Active clients dropped 10% to 717,000, down from 794,000 a year ago. Spend per active client rose 8% to $5,418. Marketplace revenue fell 9% to $159.3 million, while enterprise revenue slipped 3% to $26.3 million.

Profit held up despite the lower sales. Upwork posted GAAP net income of $31.8 million, up 8%, and adjusted EBITDA of $63.8 million. Operating expenses fell 15% after the restructuring the company announced in May.

Upwork’s plan for small and midsize clients grew fast. Business Plus volume rose 132% from a year ago, and its active clients grew 154%. About 40% of Business Plus clients made their first Upwork purchase on that plan, so it is bringing in new buyers.

Why This Matters For Self-Employed Freelancers

A smaller client base means more freelancers chase fewer buyers. Volume fell faster than the client count, so each posted project likely draws a tougher field. That pressure shows up in rates and win rates before it shows up in any earnings report.

There is a bright spot for specialists. Upwork estimates that work done by freelancers with AI skills now runs at nearly $450 million a year. That figure grew 55% from last year. AI skills are one of the few clear growth signals on the platform.

Small clients on Business Plus are a likely source of new work for solo providers. Those buyers often want a fast answer, a clear scope, and a fair fixed price.

What Self-Employed Freelancers Should Do Next

Add specific AI skills to your profile and proposals if you have them. Name the tools you use and the results you delivered. Clients who search for that expertise are the fastest-growing group Upwork reported.

Do not let one platform set your income. Our report on clients turning to AI instead of freelancers shows why. Keep direct clients and referrals active alongside marketplace work. Aim for fewer, larger projects, since spend per client is rising.

What To Watch Next

Upwork guided fourth quarter revenue to between $169 million and $177 million, below this quarter’s level. It expects full year revenue of $742 million to $750 million. Watch whether the active client count keeps sliding, since that count drives how many projects reach freelancers.

The company also opened a public beta of Upwork Now. It matches clients with freelancers who are online and ready to start. Weekly users of its MCP server, which lets AI agents work with the marketplace, grew twentyfold since August.

Upwork also bought WorkMotion, a Berlin employer of record that will hire contingent talent in more than 30 countries. CEO Hayden Brown said Upwork “executed strongly” in the quarter. CFO Erica Gessert steps down on January 1, 2027, and Peter Sanborn takes over.
