AI agents are starting to show up on Upwork and try to hire human freelancers, the platform’s chief executive said in comments reported by CDO Magazine. Upwork CEO Hayden Brown said the company sees “agents hitting our website and trying to hire humans to get work done,” though the volume is still small.
For freelancers watching AI eat into writing, coding, and design work, this is an unexpected twist. The machines that were supposed to replace you are, in some cases, trying to pay you.
What Upwork Actually Found
Brown says the agents are “not very good at it today” because they lack the clarity and comprehension of the work that is required. Creating accounts, posting jobs, and executing tasks through the platform has so far proven beyond them.
But Upwork’s own experiments found that when a human freelancer was brought in to work alongside an AI agent, task completion rates jumped by 70% or more. The company is now planning to roll out “human and agent pairs” more broadly.
Professionals who can work this way, adding the creativity, judgment, and vision that software still lacks, are already commanding a 36% premium on their hourly rates, according to Brown.

The freelance middle is getting squeezed as clients hand routine tasks to ChatGPT and similar tools. The premium is shifting toward people who can direct, correct, and finish what an AI starts.
