Hubtel, a leading indigenous Ghanaian tech company, celebrated its 20th anniversary with a thanksgiving dinner at the Kempinski Hotel Gold Coast City in Accra. The event, themed “Connecting businesses to communities,” brought together staff, clients, management, well-wishers, and stakeholders to reflect on the company’s journey and chart a new path for its future in the evolving technology industry. Founded by three graduates from Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, Hubtel has evolved from a text message service provider into a prominent technology company.

It now serves over 8,000 businesses and 12 million customers, employing 932 delivery riders across eight cities in Ghana. In an emotive speech, Hubtel CEO Alex Bram recounted the company’s 20-year journey, navigating challenges and competition. He credited their resilience and customer-centric approach for their success.

You helped us to listen more closely to our customers and find clarity in our purpose,” Mr. Bram remarked. The Minister of Youth and Development, George Opare-Addo, emphasized the need for companies to invest in digital skills development, mentorship, and entrepreneurship support.

He commended Hubtel for its role in shaping the job market and supporting youth employment.

Celebrating two decades of Hubtel

“Companies like Hubtel are very important because of the way they have redefined the job market over recent years,” he said.

“Hubtel’s story reminds us that investing in young people is synonymous with investing in Ghana’s future.”

The Minister of Communication, Digital Technology and Innovations, Samuel Nartey George, acknowledged Hubtel’s significant contribution to the nation’s digital growth. “I am in no doubt that the Hubtel story highlights a major fact we should all be proud of as Ghanaians. It speaks to the power of local innovation and that Ghanaian talent can compete at the highest levels,” he said.

Attorney General Dr. Dominic Ayine urged for the depoliticization of business support in Ghana, celebrating Hubtel’s two-decade journey of innovation and job creation. He stressed the critical need to “depoliticize and support home-grown businesses,” underscoring their importance to national development irrespective of political affiliations.

The government expressed its commitment to collaborating with forward-thinking companies like Hubtel to expand digital literacy and create more jobs for Ghanaians. As Hubtel marks this significant milestone, it continues to serve as an example of how local innovation and talent can drive national development. Veteran gospel music group, Daughters of Glorious Jesus, along with musicians Joe Mettle and Piesie Esther, entertained the guests with their performances.

The event was a celebration of Hubtel’s past successes and a call for a future where Ghanaian innovation receives unwavering, apolitical support to thrive on both local and global stages.
