The Northern Mosaic Network has received over $300,000 in funding to support 2SLGBTQIA+ entrepreneurs in the Northwest Territories. The funding, announced on Thursday by the federal government and Canada’s 2SLGBTQI+ Chamber of Commerce, is part of a $2.8 million package awarded to twelve non-profit organizations across Canada through the 2SLGBTQI+ Entrepreneurship Program. A spokesperson for Innovation, Science and Economic Development Canada confirmed that $300,500 of the total funding will go directly to the Northern Mosaic Network.

The territorial outreach organization plans to use the funds to develop the first 2SLGBTQ+ business and entrepreneurship assessment in Yellowknife. The Northern Mosaic Network also intends to create a northern business and entrepreneurship skills curriculum. Additionally, they will deliver an eight-month mentorship and cohort program for entrepreneurs.

Our goal is to establish a Queer Market Space to serve as a consistent venue for selling products and services,” stated the Northern Mosaic Network. “Ultimately, we aim to grow the number of 2SLGBTQIA+ entrepreneurs in the NWT, supported by a solid network.”

The Ecosystem Fund, an $8-million program, aims to strengthen resources and support for 2SLGBTQI+ entrepreneurs across Canada.

According to the federal government, there are more than 100,000 2SLGBTQI+ owned and operated businesses in Canada. These businesses employ over 435,000 people and generate more than $22 billion in economic activity. The funding for the Northern Mosaic Network marks a significant step in supporting and empowering 2SLGBTQIA+ entrepreneurs in the Northwest Territories.

The organization’s initiatives are expected to foster growth and create a supportive network for the community’s business owners and aspiring entrepreneurs.
