I’ve spent my career coaching leaders, teams, and founders. I also raise kids in a noisy world that confuses hard truth with harm. Here’s my stance: we must stop labeling demanding coaching as toxicity. We should reject abuse. But we also need higher standards, sharper feedback, and more grit. That is how people grow.

This matters because growth hurts. The next role, the bigger company, the bolder idea—all of it asks for thicker skin and a better mindset. If we can’t tell the difference between a bully and a builder, we’ll quit on ourselves right when the learning starts.

Growth Demands Friction—Abuse Is Something Else

Excellence requires pressure. The best leaders set a high bar and hold the line. That can feel rough in the moment. It should not feel demeaning. My rule for my kids and my clients is simple: listen for intention.
